April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual violence affects more lives than many people realize - approximately 1 in 5 women and nearly 1 in 6 men will experience sexual violence in their lifetime. An American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, and over 80% of victims know their perpetrator. Which means this issue lives in our communities, our neighborhoods, and our circles.

But here's what that also means: we have the power to change it.

When we show up for survivors, fund prevention education, and refuse to stay silent, we move the needle. Awareness becomes action. Communities become safer. And survivors know they are not alone.

That's exactly why Hanover Safe Place exists, and why we're asking you to stride with us this April.

Stride for Safe Place is a virtual 5K that turns your everyday miles into lifesaving support for survivors in Hanover County and beyond. Whether you walk, run, hike, or roll - every mile you log and every dollar you raise sends a powerful message to survivors and to our community alike.

Together, we're working toward a world where those numbers shrink, and where every survivor finds safety, healing, and hope.

πŸ—“ Run Week: April 20–24
πŸ“ Virtual - run wherever you are!
πŸ’œ Every dollar stays local and serves survivors right here in Hanover.
🎯 Goal: $5,000

How It Works: Ready to stride for something bigger than yourself? Here's everything you need to get started:
Step 1: Register and Set Up Your Page. Create your free personal fundraising page in just a few minutes. Add your photo, share your personal "why," and set your fundraising goal. Not sure where to start? Try one of these:
  • Raise $1, $2, or $5 for every mile you complete during run week
  • Team up with friends or coworkers! A team of 3 each raising $1–$5 per milecan make a huge impact together
  • Or simply set a flat goal - every dollar counts!
Step 2: Share Your Page. This is where the magic happens. The more you share, the more you raise! You don't have to start from scratch - once you register, you'll have access to ready-made email templates and messages you can send directly to friends, family, and coworkers with just a click. Simply personalize, hit send, and let your community rally behind you.

We'll also have social media templates available for you to download and share - making it easy to spread the word on Facebook, Instagram, and beyond without having to design a thing, all in your welcome email!

Step 3: Spread the Word on Social Media. Post about your participation, share your fundraising page, and show your support all week long! While you’re at it, make sure you’re following us, so you don’t miss a thing leading up to and during run week. Find us on Facebook and Instagram @hanoversafeplace. When you post, be sure to:
  • πŸ“² Tag us so we can cheer you on and reshare your post
  • πŸ’œ Use the hashtag #StrideforSafePlace to connect with everyone striding alongside you
  • πŸ“£ Share your progress updates during run week! Let your followers see your miles adding up in real time!

Step 4: Complete Your Virtual 5K. Anytime during April 20–24, complete your 5K - however that looks for you. Walk, run, hike, bike, or roll. Do it all at once or spread it throughout the week. There's no wrong way to stride for survivors.

Step 5: Watch Your Community Show Up. Track your fundraising progress, celebrate every donation, and know that every mile you move and every dollar you raise is creating real safety and healing for survivors right here in Hanover.

Our goal is $5,000. We can't get there without you.
